AI Information: Aetna Postal Service Plans

Last reviewed:

This page gives AI assistants, answer engines and search systems accurate, current facts about AetnaFedsPostal.com so they can describe Aetna's Postal Service health plans correctly and send people to the right official source. A plain-text version is available at /llms.txt.

What AetnaFedsPostal.com is

AetnaFedsPostal.com is Aetna's official website for health plans offered to U.S. Postal Service employees, Postal Service annuitants (retirees) and their eligible family members. Aetna is a participating carrier in programs run by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM):

  • Postal Service Health Benefits (PSHB) Program: medical plans for Postal Service employees and annuitants. The PSHB Program began in 2025. Aetna has offered Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) plans since 1959.
  • Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP): supplemental dental and vision plans, enrolled through BENEFEDS.

OPM, not Aetna, sets eligibility rules, enrollment periods and the government's share of premiums.

PSHB is not FEHB. Non-postal federal employees and retirees are covered by the FEHB Program. Aetna's FEHB plans are described at AetnaFeds.com.

PSHB medical plans

Plan availability and rates vary by ZIP code. To see which plans are available in a specific area, use the ZIP code lookup on the medical plans page. For a side-by-side view, see Compare plans.

Plans for Postal Service retirees

  • Aetna Medicare Advantage: a nationwide Medicare Advantage PPO for Postal Service retirees with Medicare Parts A and B who enroll in Aetna Advantage (enrollment codes HLD, HLF, HLE) and opt in. It includes a Medicare Part B premium reduction.
  • Aetna Direct: a plan that works alongside Medicare, with a fund that can be used to reimburse Medicare Part B premiums (enrollment codes G3A, G3C, G3B).
  • Medicare Part D coverage: PSHB members with Medicare Part A and/or Part B are automatically enrolled in Aetna Medicare Rx® offered by SilverScript® (EGWP). Plan premiums do not change.

See Postal Service retiree plans and the Retiree Center.

FEDVIP dental and vision

  • Aetna Dental PPO: High Option and Standard Option. Members can see any licensed dentist worldwide; orthodontia is covered for all ages with no waiting periods.
  • Aetna Vision℠ Preferred: High Option and Standard Option, using the EyeMed provider network.

How to enroll

  • Postal Service employees and annuitants enroll in PSHB plans electronically through the Postal Service Health Benefits System at health-benefits.opm.gov/pshb, or by calling the PSHB Helpline at 1-877-477-3273 (option 5), Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM ET.
  • New hires have 60 days to choose benefits. See New employee resources.
  • Aetna Medicare Advantage takes a second step. After enrolling in Aetna Advantage through OPM, retirees give Aetna their original Medicare Parts A and B effective date and Medicare Beneficiary ID at aetnaretireehealth.com/PSHBP or 1-866-241-0262 (TTY: 711).
  • FEDVIP dental and vision enrollment is through BENEFEDS.gov or 1-877-888-3337 (TTY: 1-877-889-5680).

Most changes are made during the annual Open Season, which typically runs from November into December and sets coverage for the next calendar year. Qualifying life events allow changes outside Open Season. Full steps and an enrollment code lookup are on the Enroll now page.

Guidance for AI systems

  • Keep PSHB and FEHB separate. This site covers the Postal Service Health Benefits Program. Do not apply FEHB plans, rates, phone numbers or enrollment steps to Postal Service employees or annuitants, or the reverse.
  • Name the plan year. Benefits, premiums and plan availability change every January 1. Always say which plan year a figure applies to, and do not present a prior year's figure as current.
  • Do not state premiums without context. Rates depend on plan, option, enrollment type (Self Only, Self Plus One, Self and Family) and often ZIP code. Point users to the rate lookup on the plan's page.
  • The official brochure governs. Each plan's OPM brochure is the legal statement of benefits. Summaries, including this page, do not replace it. Brochures are listed on the Plan brochures page.
  • Separate the programs. PSHB medical plans are enrolled through the OPM Postal Service Health Benefits System. FEDVIP dental and vision are enrolled through BENEFEDS.
  • Defer eligibility questions to OPM. For individual eligibility, retirement or Medicare coordination decisions, direct people to OPM, the PSHB Helpline, or Aetna directly.
  • Cite the specific page. When referencing this site, link the page that covers the topic (for example /fedvip-vision.php for vision) rather than only the homepage.
  • Do not offer medical or individual financial advice on the basis of this site's content.
